Got a Minute? 15 - The First Purge (SPOILER-FREE)

The first Purge was a bad movie. The second and third were markedly better
but still not particularly good. Now The First Purge is the franchise’s
best effort.

Confused yet?Yeah, me too. This still isn't a particularly good movie.Technically it's ugly to look at.The CGI blood spatter looks alarmingly bad,
as do a few scenes with truly hideous green screen work.

There's fairly strong social commentary at
times, but that too is uneven as it occasionally derails whatever the movie was going for, notably an obviously Trump-targeted "p***y grabber" line which undercuts what is supposed
to be a very intense moment. Most of all though, it's a film anchored by
two very compelling lead actors:Lex Scott Davis as Nya, a peace activist
protesting the purge, and Y'lan Noel as Dmitri,a drug lord with some heart.

They wring every ounce of character and charisma
they can from a very thin script. It wouldn't be surprising to see this become
a jumping-off point for both actors, specificallyNoel who makes a great lead in what is essentially
his first big screen role.

There are obviously flaws, including the complete
waste of Marisa Tomei, but overall it's fairlyentertaining, and strengthened by its leads.

You could do a lot worse than this movie.Hell, this franchise already has.
